Examining culture – what shapes a school’s culture?

The culture of a school can be seen in a number of ways as referenced by Schein (1985), MacGilchrist (1995) and Sarason (1996). Such factors include;

  • Basic assumptions and beliefs
  • Ways of relating
  • The ‘norms’

However, this does not answer the question of what shapes a culture. The answer to that is both simple and complex at the same time. It is the school leader who has ultimate responsibility for the culture of the setting. As Schein states, “the only thing of real importance that leaders do is create and manage culture.” (1985)
