Excellence and Equity – what do we mean?

The Scottish Government sets out a clear vision for Scottish education within its Delivering Excellence and Equity in Scottish Education document (June 2016).

It defines excellence as ‘ensuring every child achieves the highest standards in literacy and numeracy and the right range of skills, qualifications and achievements to allow them to succeed.’

Equity is then summised as ‘ensuring every child has the same opportunity to succeed (with a particular focus on closing the poverty – related attainment gap).

So, our focus in schools is to help every child do their very best (particularly in literacy and numeracy) which may mean doing something different for some pupils if required.

What are we missing at the moment?
