Re-thinking teacher professional learning (Dianne Mulcahy)

Phase 3, B1

This was not an easy read! However, I have pulled out some summative quotes…

  1. Learning as reflection: ‘If one doesn’t reflect, one doesn’t learn.’
  2. Learning as encountering: ‘Something pretty big has happened and I couldn’t not talk about it.’ Processes of learning that are unplanned, uncertain and indeterminate. Learning emerges through practices that entangle meaning and matter.

What does this mean for my setting?

I think we have a strong culture of learning by reflection. My staff are very reflective and normally engage in quality self-evaluation.

We could improve our practices around learning as encountering. Whilst I am definitely doing this more (I am regularly sharing my readings), I think my staff could do this more.
