Article 29 (goals of education)
Education must develop every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full. It must encourage the child’s respect for human rights, as well as respect for their parents, their own and other cultures, and the environment.
I think this statement in fascinating and I am embarrassed that I haven’t engaged with this more closely before now. The contents of the statement is challenging and provocative. How much time to we (schools) spend developing personality and talents? Do we not focus solely on ability? Likewise, how much time do we give to encouraging respect for parents and cultures?
A hearty discussion in the staffroom could follow!
